Comparing and Contrasting Photos

“Lily Lu” Meme (knowyourmeme.com)

This is a simple activity to test the students’ observing and analytical skills on comparing and contrasting photos. Some of the photos included in the presentation are before-and-after scenarios, memes, oppositions, and places. They just need to exhaustively analyze the similarities and differences between the photos in each slide using the expressions below.

Remember to moderate the class as some of the students might disagree what their colleagues will say about certain comparisons, descriptions, and analysis.

You should ask the participation of the whole class for this activity. Remember to explain the expressions as well.

Some useful expressions to compare and contrast photos (from Spencer, 2016)

  • Both photos show…
  • In both photos,
  • One similarity is that…
  • In the first/second photo,
  • One big difference between the photos is that…
  • Another important difference…
  • Compared with…
  • The first photo shows… whereas/while the second photo shows…
